Author Michael S. Roth to Speak on Importance of Liberal Education

Historian, curator, and author Michael S. Roth will discuss his book, Beyond the University: Why Liberal Education Matters, during a talk at 7 p.m. March 2 in the University Club’s Ballroom B.

Beyond the University received the 2016 Frederic W. Ness Book Award, given by the Association of American Colleges and Universities for the book that best illuminates the goals and practices of a contemporary liberal education.

The evening is free and open to the public. Reservations are requested and can be made at cgs.pitt.edu/RothHumanities.

Roth is president of Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn. Published in 2014 by Yale University Press, his book advocates for a pragmatic liberal education and for higher education to continue to play a significant role in American society.

Roth’s talk is part of the programming for Pitt’s Year of the Humanities in the University. It is sponsored by the College of General Studies, the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences, and the Humanities Center.
