Newsmakers: UCIS Seminar on Urbanization
Steve Inskeep, cohost of NPR’s Morning Edition, was the keynote speaker on the final day of Pitt’s Summer Seminar in Global Issues—a two-week course for 36 Pittsburgh-area high-school students that focused on urbanization. Using Inskeep’s book Instant City: Life and Death in Karachi as a base, the class engaged with 11 speakers who focused on issues ranging from health and sanitation in refugee camps to the environment and sustainability. The students also spent 75 minutes each day learning Chinese or Arabic. The Summer Seminar in Global Issues was developed by Pitt’s University Center for International Studies and the Global Studies Center with the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh.
